Brain and Brawn Birth

Informed and Empowered

PXL_20210629_190605236_edited.jpg

The birth of a passion

My background is in nutrition, dietetics and nutrition research in mothers and children…not a typical route to the birth world! What is more typical for me and likely will be for you is that the experience of birthing transformed me. My own four birth experiences varied widely, starting with surgical and then non-surgical but medicated hospital births and culminating in home birth. When it comes to pregnancy, labor, and birth, I’ve realized that the more informed a mama is the more confident she will be in the immense power of her body to grow and birth new life. My role as a birth doula is to walk the journey with you, providing information during pregnancy, preparing you for labor, and then supporting you physically, emotionally, and informationally as you prepare to give birth. I'll be your biggest cheerleader reminding you just how much power you have within you to help your baby find his/her way into the world calmly and comfortably. I want your birth to be the best experience it can be, and it's my role to protect what will become one of your most precious memories. Raise a glass to knowledge and power, because you've got both brain and brawn when it comes to birthing your baby!

I'm so grateful that Daphna was a part of my prenatal and birthing care team! She was a reassuring presence throughout my pregnancy and labor journey. Daphna took the time to get to know me and really understand what I wanted out of my birth experience. She helped me get in touch with what was most important to me as I made choices about giving birth, and then supported me in executing those choices. Daphna was especially great at keeping me grounded in terms of my priorities while I was in labor. I had a particularly long labor and the question came up of whether to transfer to the hospital to get an epidural so I could get some rest before delivery. Daphna reminded me of the goals and preferences I had expressed to her in the months leading up to giving birth, laid out my options, and supported me in making choices that were consistent with my desired outcome of having an empowering birth experience. Daphna helped me try lots of different strategies to get my labor to progress, and ultimately I was able to give birth at home as I'd hoped. Looking back on my experience now, I feel really proud and grateful that I was able to give birth on my own terms, and Daphna helped make that happen.

To have a doula for the birth of my first baby was a last minute decision for me and I believe it to be the best decision of my life to have Daphna as my doula. She is super supportive, kind, gentle and an amazing soul. Daphna's support and encouragement definitely helped make this experiencemore calm, comforting and empowering. She was with me every step. Not just during
pregnancy, Daphna was a great support postpartum too. She addressed any concerns that I had and helped me with valuable tips. I'm incredibly blessed to have Daphna.

Daphna was heaven sent, as a first time mother I would not be able to have my 9 pound newborn naturally at a hospital without her. She was super supportive and resourceful to my sister and me. I recommend her to other mothers!

I had the pleasure of working with Daphna during the birth of my second child. There was a point in my pregnancy where I just felt stuck. The birth was near and I didn’t want it to be. Daphna came over for our second prenatal where she walked us through comfort measures and the phases of labor and something just clicked. All of a sudden I was ready for birth. It felt like a weight had been lifted. Everything had shifted and I felt comforted and confident. My daughter was born so fast that both Daphna and our midwife were still on their way. Daphna is actually the only reason anyone got there so close to the birth! I insisted we were fine and labor wasn’t picking up yet but Daphna knew better and headed our way. I am so incredibly thankful she was there! She helped my three-year-old move in and out of the experience with ease and enjoy both the birth of her sister and her own birthday (our daughters were born the same day as predicted by the older one!). Daphna helped the house feel calm amongst the chaos that had just occurred. I don’t know what our journey would have looked like without her. I am forever thankful for the love, support and confidence she instilled in our family; especially the ease and comfort she offered our daughter as she became a big sister. That confidence is still seen today. Thank you Daphna!
--Kristina, mom to Skate

My husband and I loved Daphna's doula support. We would have been lost without her by our sides. She provided invaluable comfort, care, and experience throughout the labor process. Early check-ins weeks before labor helped us create our birth plan and learn more about our options. Even though my labor didn't follow the textbook timelines, Daphna helped us recognize certain clues to make sure we were able to follow our birth plan as best as possible. Also, her supportive postpartum check-ins were instrumental in ensuring my breastfeeding success where I initially struggled and considered quitting.
--Michelle, mom to Amelia

36 hours was not not an easy labor but my doula Daphna made the time go by. Daphna provided both physical and emotional support that made me feel strong and empowered. I was comforted by her very useful techniques like touch, massage and her rooting me on. She made my labor and delivery the best I have ever had.
--Ebony, mom to Lauryn

Daphna is so knowledgeable and delivers information with such warmth. I really appreciated all of the resources and practical tools. During labor she was such a source of comfort. Future mama clients are SO lucky to have her skills and support.
--Orly, mom to Eden

Daphna's skills as a doula are intuitive, supportive, and personable. Her warmth and ability to hold space before, during, and after giving birth were monumental in our experience as first-time parents. She guided us through each surge/contraction, and even when things didn't go as planned, she stayed right by our side through it all. She advocated for my wishes to midwives, nurses, and doctors; she helped us strategize and make some very difficult decisions; and her presence and knowledge gave us a breath of fresh air and helped us feel supported. We highly recommend Daphna as a doula.
